Xpat Interview: Jason Costa
I was born in Massachusetts, but raised in Tampa, Florida. While I was going to school in Florida I became interested in fitness and personal training. Although, I enjoyed working in the fitness field I also really liked Architecture and Design. I decided to go to school in Boston, Massachusetts for Architecture.

While attending school in Boston I still trained and massaged people in my free time. After graduating I moved to Hungary and opened a real estate company and also started Architectural consulting (www.hcrealtyadvisors.com). Even though I have these other businesses I still enjoy training people and giving massages.

Since people kept asking me if I have a fitness website I decided finally I would start one - www.costapower.hu.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I moved to Hungary about 1 year ago. My wife is Hungarian and we were living in Boston, Massachusetts and decided that this would be a good time in our life to live abroad. For her it was not too abroad since she lived in Hungary almost all of her life.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
No

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
Everyday there is a new surprise for me in Hungary. I think my biggest surprise was the "yes-ers". They are the people here that keep saying "yes" after everything I say in English. Then when I am finished speaking I say "Érted" and they say "Nem"

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Visit the castle district, go to a few restaurants, hit up a few clubs, and drink palinka

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Probably Gulyás. Most of the time you can?t go wrong with meat and potatoes.

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Heinz ketchup, Tropicana orange juice, ice cream, and chicken.

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
This is a tough one since I have so many favorites. I would say ?Gumi?. Everything and anything that is close to rubber is called gumi (rubber, condoms, tires, gum). I wanted to buy silicone sealant which is not rubber, its silicone. The guy at the store called all the sealants gumi even when it said silicone . Nem gumi, silicone. Also, ?következ?? such a funny sounding word.

8. What do you miss the most from home?
The beach, my friends, normal size cars, and normal size restrooms so I don?t have to stand on the toilet to get out of the restroom.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Crime Scene Investigator. I like the crime TV shows like Law and Order, CSI, and NCIS. It looks like it would be a lot of fun.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Any job that starts with the word ?test?. Test pilot, test subject, test engineer, etc. You know something bad will eventually happen.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
I haven?t stopped being on vacation since I got here. If you must know: Florida for 2 weeks, before that Amsterdam/Belgium for a week, before that Croatia for 1 month, then a few other places before that.

12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Massachusetts in a week, Amsterdam a few weeks later, Vienna a few weeks after that, then Spain or Germany or England, it is too far away to know yet.

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Wow so long ago. I had to really think about this one.
Bands: Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Red Hot Chili Peppers, any techno since it was somewhat new at the time (breakbeats, drum n bass, house)
Film: Pulp Fiction, Ace Ventura, Mission: Impossible
Hobby: Gym, basketball, and going to house parties.

14. What can't you resist?
If I put what I can?t resist this would get edited for content.

15. Red wine or white?
Neither. I don?t like wine. Whiskey or palinka is much better.

16. Book or movie?
If I am relaxing I would rather watch a movie. If I want to learn about a particular subject then book.

17. Morning person or night person?
Night person. My friends in Hungary don?t get ready to go out until midnight.

18. Dog person or cat person?
Neither. I am allergic to both, so it is easier not to have one. Plus our neighbors have enough barking dogs so we don?t need one.

19. Buda side or Pest side?
I like living on the Buda side on the hill because of the view. But when we go out either side is fine.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
You can see my motto on my website www.costapower.hu
