Xpat Interview: Alex Stemp

I am a self employed landscape gardener.
I am married to Eszter who is a lawyer and we have just had a baby daughter called Judy who is 8 months old.
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
Despite moving here to Hungary in 2003. I have known Hungary before throughout travelling here in the 1990's and I liked it very much. What bought me here? I found love!
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Yes. One year in the Czech Republic. 1993. English teacher.
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
The environment and how dry the atmosphere is here.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Buda and Pest one day. Then Szentendre or Esztergom the next.
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Csirke paprikás. Mákos and meggyes rétes. Fabulous!
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Strawberry yoghurt and cheeses.
7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Csütörtök - meaning Thursday. Also this is the hardest word that I have come across too. What a tongue twister!
8. What do you miss most from home?
Cumulus clouds. I miss the sunny and cloudy skies. Here in Hungary it is eother total sunshine all day or total cloud, never a mixture, or hardly ever!
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
A travel book writer. And I am doing my best to persue this by writing an account of cycling around The ukraine Carpathians. I have been there several times and really loved it there.
Or being a rodie for some of the great bands of the 1970's.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Working as a cleaner.
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
The Ukraine. I was there for a week last August. I climbed Mount Hoverla, Ukraine's highest mountain. 2068 meters high. Absolute total wilderness. I really loved it there.
12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
I really have not thought that far ahead. Perhaps Lake Balaton in autumn with the family.
13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Back to the 1980's. I was into the Jam, The Cure, The Cult, Siouxsie and the Bangees. Madness and the 2-Tone scene.
Film./ Tv. I loved Minder and Only Fools and Horses.
14. What can't you resist?
Adventure. I am always up for adventures, usually on the bike. I have always got something planned in advance to go somewhere.
15. Red wine or white?
White Villány wine.
16. Book or movie?
Movie. I concentrate more on films and documentaries.
17. Morning person or night person?
Morning person, because of my gardening lifestyle.
18. Dog person or cat person?
Both! I love dogs and cats. I feel that I can call out to them.
19. Buda or Pest side?
Really a combination of both. But with my work it?s mostly Buda.
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
"Life is not tame."
