I live in the beautiful town of Agárd (about 50 km from Bp) and spend my time teaching, reading history and old novels playing with my kids and trying to learn this beautiful finno-ugric language.
I would like to be a novelist, but have no idea where to start."
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I first came to Hungary in the summer of 1994 to spend time with my girlfriend. Then I married her.
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Never. Although to a Yorkshireman, anywhere south of Sheffield is foreign.
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
The food. Not only the quality, but the sheer range of Hungarian cuisine.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
I'm going to cheat here and take them out of the capital. Lake Velence is a great place for a weekend - Pákozd museum, Sukkoro, Agárd thermal baths, and wine cellars!
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Quite a cliché, but gulyás wins. Then töltött paprika, rakott krumpli?
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Túró Rudi! Pöttyös az igazi!
7.What is your favourite Hungarian word?
"Zsémbeskedik". And "egyébként", but my Hungarian isn't good enough to actually use the second word appropriately.
8. What do you miss most from home?
The Yorkshire accent. HP brown sauce. MAM and DAD.
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Actor or writer.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Anything that requires hard work. The heaviest thing I want to lift is a pencil.
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Northern Ireland and Yorkshire.
12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
Home again to Yorkshire, but we?re also hoping to travel around Hungary this summer.
13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
The Eagles and Dire Straits
14. What can't you resist?
A smile. Even my youngest students know I can't stay angry with a smiler.
15. Red wine or white?
I'm teetotal. So lets me expatriatedly patriotic and say Red, White, and Green.
16. Book or movie?
Book. Always. Except for those stupid movie tie-in books.
17. Morning person or night person?
Night.
18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Racism and nationalism. I think there is definitely a problem in Hungary that the right-wing is losing control of itself.
19. Buda or Pest side?
Outside! AGÁRD FOREVER!!!
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
I might not agree with what you are saying, but I will defend with my life your right to say it. (Attributed to Voltaire).
