Has a daughter, Catharine from an earlier marriage, but now lives with his partner, Alison, and her two daughters in Budapest.

Hopes to be here for 3 years and during that time to see his football team Tottenham Hotspur, win the UK Premiership and European Champions League.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
April 2009 to take up my appointment as head of the British Embassy's commercial team on behalf of UK Trade & Investment.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
This will date me..... France, India, Cyprus, Syria, Pakistan and Australia

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
The wonderful long, hot summer

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Take the view of the City from the Citadel, visit the Var, stroll up Andrassy utca, have a drink at the top of the steps of the Art Gallery overlooking Hero's Square, dinner under the tree at Gerloczy, a walk around Szentendre.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
All of it, unfortunately.

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
A nice Hungarian sauvignon blanc.

7.What is your favourite Hungarian word?
I'm torn between gyogyszertar and hutoszekreny, both fiendishly difficult to pronounce if English is your mother tongue.

8. What do you miss most from home?
A who rather than a what. My daughter Catharine - who is at school there.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
To be a flying trapeze artiste with Cirque de Soleil

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Cleaning up the Sziget Festival site.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Bruges, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Berlin and Prague. All visited en route to Budapest. Before that, Kilcare Beach in New South Wales, Australia.

12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
Gliding elegantly down a ski slope somewhere. In reality, I'll spend most of my time dusting off snow and trying to get myself upright.

David Bowie

Chocolate

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
The inequality of opportunity for girls and women around the world in education and employment.

19. Buda or Pest side?
I have a foot in both camps - live in Buda but work in Pest. I like them both in equal measure.

Keep calm and carry on.
