Xpat Interview: Steven E. Kuhn
"Steven E. Kuhn was born on the 30th of May 1967 in Pennsylvania, USA. When he was 19 he joined the U.S. Army and was sent to Germany for his first assignment where he then spent the next 8 years. In 1990, at the beginning of the Gulf War, he was sent to Iraq with the legendary 8th Cavalry, fought on the front and returned with the Bronze Star Medal for his actions in combat.

He left the Army in 1993 and stayed as a civilian in Berlin, Germany, working in the corporate world in most of western Europe, England and major US Cities for British, American, German and South African Fitness companies. He received his MBA at the Bradford University ? School of Business Management in Leeds, U.K.

In 2003, at the beginning of the Iraq war, he wrote his experiences in the book "Served in the Gulf from Soldier to Cynic" only available in German "Soldat im Golfkrieg vom Kämpfer zum Zweifler". He was and is often a guest on most German Talk Shows, news channels and political discussion concerning war, his experiences and actual news, often drawing much attention to his answers which are very direct and exacting.

Steven is currently working successfully as a consultant in the management of change sector, currently for Holmes Place Budapest, his last position for Holmes Place was in 2003 as European Operations and Development Manager. He also works passionately in German Politics as a Member of the Management Advisory Board for Germanys largest Political, non Party, group; Zivile Koalition Germany he is also Blogger and consultant for the freiewelt.net, Germanys largest political Blogger Website."


1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
1st September 2009 due to my new role at Holmes Place Health Clubs

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
UK, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Germany

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
I had heard it is beautiful...it really is breathtaking - especially the view from InterContinental or Sofitel.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend-what must they absolutely see and do?
Depends - if they are single etc. For singles the club scene around Liszt Ferenc square.
The Basilica is a must for everyone - it is one of highest energy loaded places I found in Budapest.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Wild boar goulash with tarhonya, but have not tried much else!

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Zamu, the 100% natural Amazon Rainforest health drink.

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Jó napot - you can use it any time of the day and it works for me.

8. What do you miss the most from home?
Home is always where I am - I've been on the road since I was a child.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I am living the life I always wanted to live.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Well, I know what you mean, but I don't think like that.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
I am living it!

12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
The Amazon Rainforest in Peru with the Shipibo Indians

13 What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Band: Deaf leopard
Film: Breakfast Club
Hobby: I used to paint.

14. What can't you resist?
The smile of a beautiful person.

Red: Shiraz

16. Book or movie?
Book

17. Morning person or night person?
Night

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
The erosion of personal freedoms and rights world wide

19. Buda side or Pest side?
Pest - definitely.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Love and accept yourself, this brings happiness.
