Xpat Interview: Shannon Ramaka
Shannon grew up in North Carolina and adventured to Santa Clara University in California on a Theatre Arts scholarship in 1984. She promised her parents that she would also get a degree in a ?responsible?subject so she double- majored in Political Science. She moved to Oregon to start a family and graduated from Southern Oregon University with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Later she completed her master's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction.



Seven years into her career in, she envisioned and established a public charter school using the arts to teach all subjects. At the same time she obtained her administrative credential from Portland State University. Later she pursued art education and taught graduate students at Southern University. Her first position teaching internationally was as the secondary drama teacher at ISL in Lusaka, Zambia in 2007.

She has a son, Brandon, who is going to law school this fall and a daughter, Emma who will be attending AISB this year either as a junior or sendior. In her spare time she writes, cooks, paints, walks, reads, swims,plays tennis, sings, grows flowers, creates on the computer, takes pictures, and relaxes with yoga. She is currently teaching Ib Theatre and 9th grade art at the American Internatonal School of Budapest in Hungary.


1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?

August 2009. One shipment from Zambia and one shipment from the U.S. A 16 year old daughter and 2 small zambian "Fluffy" dogs.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Zambia

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
How many dogs there are!

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Walk in the theatre district and have dinner, take a part day city tour to see the sites over the Danube, go to the Szechenyi Baths

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Pastries

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Milk from the local dairy/yogurt, green lettuce, juice

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Viszontlátása

8. What do you miss the most from home?
Healthy salads, dear friends

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I really love the one that I'm in.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Accountant

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Zanzibar

12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Dehab, Egypt

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Hobby- all sports and arts (volleyball, swimming, theatre)
I loved Barbara Streisand, Styx, Billy Joel ...

14. What can't you resist?
Buying clothes for my daughter...

15. Red wine or white?
Red

16. Book or movie?
Hmmm...probably a movie first...

17. Morning person or night person?
I'm not sure I'm either any more...

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Empowerment of women and people around the world

19. Buda side or Pest side?
I live on the Buda side but love both

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Live fully, love today, and all your tomorrows will be great. everyone has a unique gift to give the world...when they give it they can be happy.
