Xpat Interview: Ashley Green

Our program is designed to help learners of English at a more advanced stage in theirstudies to collect new vocabulary and expressions, using popular music and lyrics as a resource and aide-memoire for new language.
I was born in Leicester, England, but have lived an worked in a number of countries prior to arriving in Budapest in 2003.
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I came to Budapest in 2003. I was sent here by my then employers to take a post-graduate course.
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Yes. In Poland, in Finland and in Russia.
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
In a positive way, the beauty of the countryside. More negatively, the 'island' mentality was a bit of a shock.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
In the colder months, they must visit a good selection of ruin pubs and yarn expressively about life's finer moments. In the summer, they should all try the Libego (chairlift near Normafa) .
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Beef Stew and Gnocchi
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Milk for tea
7.What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Icipici
8. What do you miss most from home?
The air quality (especially in Pest) and the buzz of an audience at gigs
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Professional Lothario, maybe?
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Any of the ones I had before last year
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Croatia
12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
I have no idea - probably Croatia again
13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Too many to mention - no one favorite (how boring would that be?)
14. What can't you resist?
I have a strong will, but Slavic women are a toughy.

Red
16. Book or movie?
Movie
17. Morning person or night person?
Night
18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
In Hungary? The availability of quality options for true music lovers! All the neighbouring countries seem to have a greater variety of musical options and concerts by cool bands to go to, Why not in Budapest?
In the wider world, I would like to see a bit less logic and a bit more humanity.
19. Buda or Pest side?
Definitely Buda. Cant see what everyone likes about Pest at all.
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
You get what you focus on, whether you want it or don't want it. So focus on what you want.
