Xpat Interview: Zoltan Rendes, Hungarian TV Personality
Zoltan Rendes is currently working as Head of Creative at TV2 (member of the Pro7Sat1 Group). He is responsible for channel and programme design as well as promotion of TV2 and two cable channels FEM3 and Pro4 and he is also directing promotion and advertisement spots.

He started his media career 19 years ago as a journalist intern at a countryside daily newspaper, later he was awarded for his work as an investigative reporter.

In 1997 he was contracted by RTL Hungary where he became a crisis correspondent, he produced numerous documentaries from all over the world. He was co-host of the award winning weekly doc-show “21st Century” and the host and creator of the highly acclaimed action documentary mini-series “The Last Boyscout”.

In 2003 a book by journalist Eva Szegedi titled “The Last Boyscout – Zoltan Rendes, RTL, Planet Earth” was published about his adventures. He always wanted to pursue a career in the creative industry, so he left RTL in 2007 to work as a creative executive at TV2. He has also worked on projects as a marketing and creative consultant mostly in the healthcare and hi-tech industry.

1. Where did you grow up?
In the beautiful countryside city of Pécs – the heart of the Hungarian mediterranum.

2. What Hungarian traditions bring back fond memories of your childhood?
The family lunch on Sundays with the traditional Hungarian bouillon.

3. What would you miss most if you moved away from Hungary?
Friends, family and home.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
An evening walk in the castle, eating Hungarian sausage and langos at a market in the morning and a grand Budapest night out.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Hungarian fishsoup hot and spicy!

6. What is never missing from your kitchen?
My dog! :-)

7. What is your favourite place in Hungary?
Home of course and the charming castle of Hedervar in the “Danube Islands” region.

8. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I always had the passion for becoming an MD, but I never had time to pursue it. Maybe later on.

9. What’s a job you would definitely never want?
Every job has its challenges and can give satisfaction if you do it right. I wouldn’t rule out anything.

10. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Discovering ancient Maya culture and swimming @ Riviera Maya, Mexico

11. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
I’m planning to show my all time fave city, good, old New York City to my wife.

12. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Band: Bruce Springsteen and Depeche Mode
Hobbies: acting and martial arts
Movie: Bitter Moon, Silent Touch, Casablanca, It’s a Wonderful Life

13. What can’t you resist?
I can resist anything, but fortunately I don’t have to.

14. Red wine or white?
Red, red, red

15. Which achievement in your life are you most pleased about?
Becoming a family man, after being a global adventurer. A beautiful wife, a baby boy we are expecting in July and an action hero dog called Jack make my life perfect.

Movie these days

17. Morning person or night person?
Night

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
I used to run errands for international aid organizations in crisis and war territories and charity is still a part of my life. I feel concerned about any social issues related to children.

19. Buda side or Pest side?
Buda for life, Pest for fun

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Being a hero is easy, staying alive is more difficult...
