The current day job is working as a finance and accounting trainer for a British company, teaching international accounting qualifications. I work mainly in Russia and Ukraine- but Budapest is home.
I'm married- Hungarian wife of 12 years, with two sons.
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I arrived in January 1996. That was a cold winter! A woman brought me here- she disappeared three weeks later and I haven't seen her since.
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Santiago Chile, as a student in 1987. Totally different to Budapest in every respect.
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
That you have to give way to the right. Fortunately the car I crashed into was a Trabant, so not much financial damage, and no one was hurt.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
A classical concert at MUPA or an Opera. And a stroll over Margit Hid to see the view.
5. What is your favorite Hungarian food?
Harcsa halászlé (Fish Soup).
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Milk. I can't drink tea without it.
7. What is your favorite Hungarian word?
Pezsgő- when you say the word, you can hear the pop of the cork, followed by the hiss of the bubbles. Very clever.
8. What do you miss most from home?
English country pubs.
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I would love to be a classical musician.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Auditor. That is how I started my career. Soul destroying.
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Istria, Croatia. One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited.
12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
Salzburg.
13. What was your favorite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Genesis were my favorite band. I didn't like films when I was a teen. Can't admit publicly what my favorite hobby was.
14. What can't you resist?
Chocolate. If I open a bar of chocolate, I have to finish it.
15. Red wine or white?
Red. Preferably from Villányi or Szekszárd.
16. Book or movie?
Book. I haven't read one in Hungarian yet.
17. Morning person or night person?
Morning. Especially in June. I go running at 5.00 am! The best time of the day.
18. Dog person or cat person?
Don't really like either. If I had to choose, it would be a dog.
19. Buda or Pest side?
Am I allowed to say Óbuda? I love this part of the city. It still feels like its another city with its own special atmosphere.
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Success means being happy not being rich.
