Xpat Interview: Thomas M. Fischer, Now Former GM Corinthia Hotel Budapest
Mr. Fischer was born and raised in Munich, Germany. He is a college graduate, he has also completed hotel school, and received his MBA in 2010.

Mr. Fischer has worked with some of the major hotel chains such as the Kempinski, Hyatt and Hilton. He has also worked with privately owned companies, and so has been exposed to various types of businesses including city center locations, resorts and golf operations.

Prior to coming to Budapest he was based in Frankfurt for 2 years. He has had several international positings previously, including in Egypt; London; Moscow and Beijing during the Olympics in 2008.

His hobbies include sports such as football, golf, tennis and skiing. In his free time Thomas also enjoys the theatre, and travelling.


1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
1st of March 2012 when I assumed my posting as General Manager of one of the finest hotels in Europe, the Corinthia Hotel Budapest, also known as the Grand Hotel Royal.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
It is simply impossible for me to guess the meaning of any word spoken in Hungarian language

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Stay at the „Royal”, eat Langos and taste Palinka, enjoy the many magnificent buildings, take a bird’s eye view onto the city from the Buda hills and visit one of the famous thermal baths.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Salami :-)

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Being from Munich and a true Bavarian... A cold beer

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Köszönöm

8. What do you miss the most from home?
Apart from some friends, I am not missing much

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Succeeding Perry Mason as a lawyer

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Any kind of routine works

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
We went back to Asia on a roundtrip to Sri Lanka

12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
I would like to discover Hungary a bit

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Band: Halloween, Film: Back to the future, Hobby: Football, football and more football

14. What can't you resist?
Any kind of sour sweets

15. Red wine or white?
Talking to a German... Beer

16. Book or movie?
Both

17. Morning person or night person?
As a hotelier also both

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
We do like to support children in need and associate with such foundations

19. Buda side or Pest side?
Pest for business, Buda for relaxation

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Change is fun
