Detti Simon, Regional Director of Bátortábor in Hungary
After 26 years of experience both on advertising agency and client-side, Detti Simon has taken over as regional director of Bátor Tábor. Smooth transition was guaranteed she worked along with the exiting CEO, Tamás Knecht for 4 months.

Detti’s career has spanned roles as a consultant, marketing director, strategic planner, and client relations director.

For the past nine years, she was responsible for the business performance and operational efficiency at DDB Advertising Agency, managing brands such as McDonald's, Magyar Telekom, Auchan, and Törley. Beyond the corporate world, she also served for three years on the board of the Ronald McDonald Foundation.

"While I loved agency life and take immense pride in the countless local and international successes we achieved at DDB, there was never a moment of doubt when the opportunity arose to join Bátor Tábor. This foundation, one of the most professionally run in Hungary, transforms the lives of children with serious and chronic illnesses through therapeutic experiences. I can’t imagine anything more inspiring and uplifting. As a parent, I also see this as a meaningful example for my teenage son."

"Visiting the camp and seeing the joy of the children and the incredible enthusiasm of the volunteers was an unforgettable experience. One of my favorite moments was on my first day, during the evening camp dance. A little girl stood beside me and, noticing I didn´t know the choreography, said: ‘I see you’re new - come, I’ll show you!’ And she was right - I am new, and I’m just getting started."

1. Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Tatabánya, Hungary, a sleepy industrial town based on coal mining. When I was a teenager, there was no more coal to be mined, but the city didn´t have too much to offer either. Still it was a formative period, I met a few of my best friends there 46 years ago. We still keep ourselves rooted.

2. If you could be an expat anywhere in the world, where would you choose?

I have a bi-cultural German-Hungarian family, so I would prefer Vienna or Berlin. Lovely vibes and culture. However, if you asked my German husband, he would vote for California. Family dynamics.

3. What would you miss most if you moved away from Hungary?

I am not planning to move. I have a mission with my colleagues at Bátor Tábor. We are in the `business´of giving seriously and chronically ill children back their childhood, that the illness has stolen from them. It is a very strong reason to stay. I am definitely staying.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?

I would cook for them and bake some home-made bread. That would be vital. Food is a love-language for me. Otherwise: it depends on their interests, but I would advise them to avoid the tourist things and rather go for a hike, an exhibition or just a long walk in the city with some stories by me. Budapest is very nice, it would be important for me to show its face that they would like to see.

5. What is your favourite food?

Spinach- the way my mom used to do it. By far!

6. What is your favourite sport / form of exercise?

Yoga, pilates, swimming and hiking.

7. What is your favourite place in Hungary?

Where my loved ones are: husband, son, family and friends. Sounds like a cliché, but I am attached to people and not to places. COVID was a good learning curve for that: I was at a lovely place but I missed so many people.

8. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?

Bátor Tábor is a home coming for me. Cannot imagine doing anything else. It is important to have a real purpose in your professional life. I have that, I am grateful for that and I am here to stay with full power.

10. Where did you spend your last vacation?

Camping in Croatia. First time camping. We were pretty much losers compared to other campers, but it was great fun. I know by now that pros have even string of lights outside their tents. It was an investment we made so we will look much more pro this year. Plus we will do more grilling – also a learning, and I love it anyhow.

11. Where do you hope to spend your next one?

Camping again. It was great!!

But with a teenage son, we will soon pay a short visit to the FC Bayern München Arena. I am pretty much prepared about the team and heros from the past.

And Munich is the city, where my husband was born.

12. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?

The band is so embarrassing now looking back, that I won´t mention it. But I used to do lots of sports and I was a pro dancer in classical dances. It doesn´t mean I am a pro dancer now. I can dance with professionals of my age. But this is sort of limited- to put it mildly.

13. Apart of temptation what can't you resist?

Family pyjama parties, if it is possible. Breakfast in bed, books, family movies. Maybe a board game in the living room later. And no one does the dishes on that day.

14. Red wine or white?

Rose. But rather green tea.

15. Book or movie?

Both for sure!

16. Morning person or night person?

Absolutely a morning person. I start my day at 5 am. It is great to have long day. I feel I live longer.

17. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?

Injustice, bullying and not treating kids and old people with dignity.

18. Buda or Pest side?

It is not the place. It is the people. Home is where your loved ones are.

19. Which achievement in your life are you most pleased about?

It is not an achievement, it was rather bravery to say ´yes´ to my husband on the third date. It was 19 years ago. It was my boldest and best decision and it seems to work.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?

Strong women are not born. They are made by the storms they walk through.
