"The Pest German Theatre opened on what is now Vörösmarty Square on 9 February 1812, with two plays by Kotzebue, for which the music was composed by Beethoven. The idea for the establishment of the theatre arose during the reign of Josef II, as Pest was gaining in importance and the growing bourgeoisie had an increasing demand for culture.
