Frederick Sweet was born in New York City of Hungarian parents (both from Budapest) who had immigrated to the United States before World War II. Since Hungarian was spoken at home, Sweet acquired it as a second language.

Born in Sussex in 1949, studied to qualify as a Chartered Surveyor through the Universities of London and Reading. Practiced in London's West End and the South of England before moving to property related advertising.

My husbands' family left Hungary in 1946 after the expropriation of their stately home and settled in Paris where we met at university in 1965, studying political science. I am myself of German origin and was also brought up in Paris. We married, I learned Hungarian.
