Free Entry: Visit Energy Facilities in Hungary During 'Night of Power Plants' on 17 October
Hungary’s Night of Power Plants, taking place on 17 October, offers a unique opportunity to explore the facilities that supply the country’s energy and utilities. Now in its sixth year, the event is organized by the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH) along with its partners, and has become the largest and most well-attended energy sector event in Hungary.

More than 50 companies from across the energy and utility industries will open their doors, including power plants, district heating providers, water and gas companies, oil firms, and waste management facilities. For one evening, visitors can go behind the scenes with expert guides to learn how electricity, heat, water, and waste services are delivered to Hungarian households.

This year’s programme features several new sites like the Püspökszilágy radioactive waste storage facility, the national electricity control centre, Hungary’s biggest oil refinery, and an underground utility tunnel, offering fresh insights into the country’s infrastructure.

The event also focuses on young people, providing career guidance for students interested in energy sector professions. With thousands of attendees from across Hungary every year, places book up quickly.

Coinciding with the Night of Power Plants, 17 October is also District Heating Day, organized by the Hungarian District Heating Association (MaTáSzSz), featuring open days, site visits, and community activities around the country.

Television presenter Csaba Gyetván returns as the event ambassador, sharing previews of selected venues before the night itself. Registration opens on 1 October at eromuvekejszakaja.hu, with further updates available on MEKH’s Facebook page.
