- 17 Sep 2009 12:00 PM

A native of the United States, she describes herself as, 'a cheesehead at heart' showing her pride for being from America's dairy land - the state of Wisconsin. Katherine grew up in the village of Cambridge, sharing the place that she calls home with just 1,000 other citizens.
She attended the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse for her post-secondary education where she received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Marketing with specializations in Economics and International Business. While in college, she was an active member of AIESEC, American Marketing Association and the high honors fraternity Beta Gamma Sigma.
After graduation, Katherine was hired by the international accounting and tax-advising firm MS City Treuhand as their new Marketing Coordinator. She may be new to Hungary but expat life is nothing new for Ms. Zibell. In addition to Budapest, she has lived in Denmark while studying at the Copenhagen Business School. In addition to living abroad, she has traveled nearly all of Europe.
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I arrived in June of this year and I came here for my current job. Upon college graduation, I was hired as the Marketing Coordinator at MS City Treuhand, an international accounting and tax-advising firm.
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Yes! I studied and lived in Denmark in 2008 for six months. I was doing a semester abroad program at the Copenhagen Business School.
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
Having a dollar-mindset, seeing the prices of things was pretty funny to me. I could spend 'five thousand' for dinner?! Or the fact that you can be a millionaire in a few months.
Other than that, I was shocked at the amount of homeless people, how much people smoke, how there is always something going on in the city no matter the day or time and the amount of Brazilians I've met here.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Without a doubt I would take them to the Parliament, Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion and the House of Terror. At night, we would go to Gödör the Winebar, or Andersen's Danish Pub.
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Anything with paprika
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Kefir, cucumbers and pizza-flavored Bake Rolls (they are so much better cold!)
7.What is your favourite Hungarian word?
'Egészségedre' for a couple of reasons. The word is so useful - you can use it when you cheers, before eating or when someone sneezes. It's also a hard word to pronounce so foreigners really think you're smart when you say it. Also, it's one of about five Hungarian words I know!
8. What do you miss most from home?
I would say the things I miss the most are: the charm of Midwesterners (especially Wisconsinites), knowing the language, my friends, family and roommates, driving and my cat Sally Jones
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
International economist, personal shopper, chef or travel book writer
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Construction- it's too noisy for my taste.
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I went to Vienna for the weekend. Before that, my family and I went to Marco Island, Florida for a week before I left for Hungary.
12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
I'm going to a work conference in Berlin and after that I'm going to Italy for vacation.
13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
American country music
14. What can't you resist?
Wine, shopping, pizza-flavored Bake Rolls
15. Red wine or white?
Usually white but I'm getting into red (especially the Hungarian red wine)
16. Book or movie?
Book - I don't have the attention span (or time usually) to watch an entire movie at once
17. Morning person or night person?
Honestly, I think I'm neither! I would prefer to be a morning person though
18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Education. I think it's a lack of education is a fundamental cause of many, if not most, other social issues.
19. Buda or Pest side?
Pest is where it's at!
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Lyrics from the Jason Mraz song, 'Details in the Fabric':
"Hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way"
Also, "livet er smukt", which is "life is beautiful" in Danish
