Inflation stood at 5.6% in June, above analysts’ forecasts, after rising 5.3% year-on-year in May, the Central Statistics Office announced last week. Core inflation, stripping out the impacts of energy and food prices, was 4.9%. The spike in consumer prices was due to higher taxes, including VAT and excise taxes, analysts said. Excluding these effects, inflation rose 3.4% year-on-year in June.

Hungary has won the 18-month long dispute with Brussels on crisis management, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a video message posted on his Facebook site. Hungarian households have amassed Ft 143 billion of debt to energy companies as of May 31, half of which is owed to gas companies, according to data from the Hungarian Energy Office, Development Minister Mrs. László Németh reported. Gas companies switched off gas at 102,000 households and 13,000 business, while electricity companies cut off service affecting 37,000 households and 3,000 companies.
