The deportation of rejected asylum seekers is a major refugee policy challenge that should be coped with at the level of the European Union, László Trócsányi, Hungary’s justice minister, told an Austrian paper. Nobel laureate author Imre Kertész died at age 86 after a long and serious illness, the publisher Magvető said. The novelist, essayist and translator was the first Hungarian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming a Nobel laureate in 2002.

A travelling exhibition installed in a train wagon was opened at Budapest’s Nyugati railway station. It pays tribute to Hungarians deported to Soviet forced labour camps in late 1944 and during the first half of 1945. The exhibition forms part of an anniversary programme series running until early 2017.
