Rudas spa and swimming pool re-opened to the general public on Thursday following renovation. The renovation forms part of a complex strategy whose aim is to make Budapest an attractive spa city again, deputy mayor Tamás Szentes said at the opening ceremony. The state will provide nearly Ft 150 million in subsidies for health care for ethnic Hungarians visiting Hungary, the health state secretariat announced last week. Ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine and Serbia may apply for such treatments as cancer operations without chemotherapy.

The Hungarian mortality rate is almost 50% higher than the average of the most developed EU15 countries, according to a study included in the Central Statistics Office publication Demographic Portrait 2012. The death rate here is also higher than in those countries that joined the EU simultaneously or later than Hungary.

Hospital Association chairman Jenő Rácz told public television last Friday morning that he approves of medical staff accepting “gratitude money” from patients for their treatment. The change in the Labour Code effective July 1 classifies the acceptance of gratitude money as a crime, “except if the employer orders otherwise”.

The State Medical Office on Tuesday stepped up the heat alert in effect for the whole country to third degree – the highest – and extended the alert until midnight Friday. The statement said temperatures are forecast to reach 33-36C today and up to 37C on Thursday.

A successful heart transplant was performed on a three-month-old baby at the National Cardiology Institute last Thursday, director general Péter Ofner announced on Monday. The 5kg baby boy is the youngest patient to receive a new heart in Hungary, he said, and is in a stable condition.
