In the Parliament building on Friday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Olympic and Paralympic achievements unite the Hungarian people. He was speaking at an event in which, together with President János Áder and Speaker of the House László Kövér, he awarded decorations to the Hungarian athletes who won medals at the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio.

The government has approved 2.5 trillion forints (EUR 8bn) worth of public road upgrades in Hungary to be completed by 2022, government office chief János Lázár said on Thursday. Under the cabinet’s Wednesday decision, 81 major roads will be upgraded and some 1,000 kilometres of dual carriageways will be built, with financing from national and European Union sources, Lázár said.

Output of Hungary’s construction industry dropped by an annual 17.6% in July, the Central Statistical Office said. The decline followed twelve-month decreases of 16.2% in June and 25.8% in May. Output of the buildings segment rose by 1.0%, mainly on the construction of industrial buildings, but also lifted by the construction of schools and sports facilities.

The government considers sports as a “strategic sector and a national cause”, János Lázár, the government office chief, told a weekly press briefing.
