This international group rehearses weekly (Sunday evenings, from 5 to 8 pm) in Budapest’s 5th district, and gives concerts in some of Budapest’s finest churches. Commenting on the Speaker of Parliament’s recent radio interview, left-wing columnists accuse Mr. Kövér of proposing the revival of a rule by decree system. Conservative pundits as well as a group of left- liberal constitutional lawyers say that Mr. Kövér had no undemocratic intentions, and agree that the current legislative practice is far too bureaucratic.

What can one say about the newly introduced ethics textbook for Hungarian fifth graders? For starters, it is not, strictly speaking, an ethics text. Ethics is not a branch of religion, and being ethical is not the same as following the law or adhering to societal norms. So a textbook that lauds religious virtues and advocates unquestioning civil obedience doesn’t belong in an ethics class.

I really didn’t think that László Köver, president/speaker of the Hungarian parliament, could still surprise me. Yet he manages. Here is his latest. By way of preface, I should note that there are some commentators who say that one ought not take Kövér terribly seriously. He is just this kind of a fellow. Perhaps his bark is worse than his bite.

Media gave ample coverage to the guilty verdicts delivered recently in what was a closely watched murder trial in Hungary. The four defendants were found guilty in the death of six Roma, shocking murders committed in 2008 and 2009. Three were sentenced to life in prison without parole and one of them, an accomplice, to 13 years without parole.
