More Affordable Shopping in Hungary as Markup Caps Continue
An extension of a mandatory caps on a range of food and non-food products until February 28, 2026 has come into effect on Monday.

From now on, families and pensioners can buy even more products at a lower price, state secretary Robert Zsigo said in a post on Facebook.

The markups cap now also applies to apples, pears, plums, grapes, tomatoes, cabbage, red onions and green peppers, cream cheese, spreadable cheese, beef tenderloin, beef brisket, pork liver, pork liver cream and baby food, he listed.

Budapest Metropolitan Government Office head Botond Sara said in a seperate post that the office will continue to inspect retailers to determine if they are complying with regulations.

So far the government office has conducted nearly 500 inspections, and every time it has encountered irregularities, it has taken action and imposed fines, he added.

The government rolled out a 10pc cap on markups for the food products and a 15pc cap on the non-food products in the spring. The measure was set to expire at the end of November.
