I helped offer a Christmas lunch to the least well-off in Budapest today. It was the best thing I’ve done since I arrived here. The Hungarian Interchurch Aid organisation ran the event, with support from local companies, and I went down with a small group from the Embassy to do what we could to contribute.

Various authorities mounted a co-ordinated raid at the Budapest Wholesale Market from 10 p.m, Wednesday night to early Thursday morning, impounding 66 tons of fruit and vegetables of unknown origin, Regional Development Ministry state secretary Gyula Budai announced on Thursday.

Companies involved in food or fodder production must pay by May 31 a new food safety monitoring tax that was announced only last week. The announcement was made by the National Food Chain Safety Office, a body created earlier this year from the merger of agriculture administration office MGSZH and the Hungarian Food Safety Office.

Tickets are now on sale for 'Saturday Night Fever' on 5 May, this year's International Women's Club of Budapest Charity Ball. Funds raised at this event will go their “Lift a Life” project which helps destitute Hungarian Families. IWC intends to help these families restart their lives in a small way, for example by providing the children with staple foods so they do not go hungry every day.
