This year’s annual XpatLoop birthday bash in the Corinthia’s Grand Ballroom will be supporting UNICEF Hungary, Lions Club of Budapest and the local Csodalámpa (Magic Lamp) Foundation, which since 2003 has acted on more than 2686 wishes by 3- to 18-year-old Hungarian children who have life-threatening illnesses.

Three men have been taken into custody in Szeged, southeast Hungary, in connection with the theft of 2,000 euros from four Syrian migrants near the M5 motorway, local police said. Spokeswoman Csilla Gyugyi said the suspects offered to transport the migrants from Roszke, on the southern border with Serbia, to Budapest for 250 euros per head. The migrants accepted the offer and paid a deposit.

Panic erupted around Deák tér around midnight last night as sounds similar to gunfire were heard as a crowd of football hooligans clashed with police nearby. The square, usually filled with tourists and Hungarians enjoying the Budapest nightlife, emptied as patrons fled in all directions.
