Addressing discontent on the part of Hungarian teachers who plan to hold a demonstration, the Socialist leader, József Tóbiás, said on Tuesday that it was not enough to tinker with the education system but it must be put on an entirely new footing. Tóbiás said professionals in Hungary had been humiliated and managed unprofessionally and mindlessly.

Teachers are preparing to hold a nationwide demonstration on Feb. 13 with a number of demands for better conditions in the sector, a union head said. The chairwoman of teacher trade union (PSZ), Piroska Galló, told a press conference that the strike committee had formulated 25 demands, including a drastic reduction in the curriculum and the number of compulsory classroom hours.

I have the distinct feeling that something is afoot in Hungary, something the self-satisfied Orbán government is not prepared for. I see the beginnings of a movement that may well overcome the current apathy and resignation of Hungarian society and produce active resistance to the Orbán regime.

The government-supported vocational training scheme for ethnic Hungarians in neighbouring countries has proved successful this year, the state secretary for Hungarian communities beyond the borders said. The budget available for the programme this year was 500 million forints (EUR 1.7m), and increased significantly from last year, János Árpád Potápi told a conference.
