Cigarette Sales Declining Dramatically In Hungary

Statistics released recently by NAV, the Hungarian Tax and Financial Control Administration, show that sales of cigarette are significantly falling, Népszabadság reported last Friday. According to the NAV figures published by this national newspaper, 623 million cigarettes were sold in July, around 40% fewer than in June 2013 when new regulations on tobacco retail came into effect.

We haven’t talked about the tobacconist shops lately, although there is quite a bit to be said about them. First and foremost, that as the result of the newly restricted availability and the price hikes black market sales of cigarettes have soared in the last couple of months. Fewer and fewer people are buying cigarettes at the designated stores.
