Motorists in Budapest paid higher premiums: an average HUF 83,400, down 0.5pc annually.

The NBH attributed the decreasing premiums to intensifying market competition.

The average premium for individual policies covering taxis rose 3pc to HUF 171,500, while the premium for trucks edged down 1pc to HUF 95,300.

The average premium for fleet passenger cars increased 5pc to HUF 86,200.

There were about 4,113,200 compulsory vehicle insurance policies in Hungary during the period.
