Data of the latest censuses have helped us draw the present demographic map of the Carpathian Basin. In 1990 József Antall could consider himself, spiritually at least, prime minister of 15 million Hungarians but today Viktor Orbán can only refer to between 12 to 13 million. There are eight states in the Carpathian Basin of 285 000 sq km with a total population of 26 million.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the burial of József Antall, the first democratically elected prime minister of Hungary after the fall of communism. I remember well the day of his funeral, arriving as it did just a few days before Christmas. Hungary was a nation in mourning.

Commemorations will be held to pay tribute to József Antall, Hungary’s prime minister between 1990-93, on Thursday, the 20th anniversary of his death. Péter Boross, who became prime minister after Antall’s death, told MTI on the eve of the anniversary that Antall was a “well-prepared, calm politician who contributed to the long-term interests of the nation”.
