I’ve wanted to blog about our Queen’s Birthday Party for a little while now. But first we got very busy in the Embassy with preparations for the European Council and then I went down to the Balaton for a couple of days. Now things are a little more back to normal and I’m catching up.

Did you see the celebrations of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this weekend? I thought they were spectacular. The procession of boats down the river Thames was majestic. I’ve been away from Budapest for the last two weeks. For the first time I went back to London to the annual gathering of all British Ambassadors from around the world. It was my first time there and so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But the week was really good.

George and Mari Gömöri had assembled a collection of poetry about the holocaust, written by Hungarian Jews, non-Jews and Roma who had either experienced it personally or by those touched by it in other ways. They and their collaborators translated the verses into English and published the book “I Lived on This Earth”. It was launched in London at the end ...

"The UK has a strong image around the world and, as I’ve discovered, here in Hungary. We’re respected for our traditions, our reliability and the quality of what we produce. It’s a great advantage for us – whether we’re working in Embassies overseas or trying to do business there. But the British brand needs a refresh. And that’s what the British government’s GREAT Campaign is aiming to do.
