The mayor of Debrecen spoke out yesterday against vandals who had painted a cross turned upside down and a swastika on the Grand Church, the city’s most prominent building. A pastor at the church has filed a report about the case and Debrecen police have launched an investigation.

Civil groups held a demonstration on Sunday against a development project in the City Park, dubbed the Liget Project, which includes constructing a museum quarter. Over five hundred participants adopted a symbol of their protest, a tree growing out of a clenched fist. Organisers said that civil groups demanded a halt to the project and planned changes to the park withdrawn.

A good school cannot be “built” without a dialogue with all the teachers, Human Resources Minister Zoltan Balog told headmasters in Szeged, commenting on a full-day strike organised by unions. Public school teachers held a full-day strike on Wednesday after their strike committee had failed to reach an agreement with the government earlier this week on their demands.

Hungary and South Korea have agreed to launch direct flights between their capital cities this summer. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told a press conference that over the first phase of cooperation, Asiana Airlines, South Korea’s second biggest carrier, will operate one flight a week between Budapest and Seoul from the beginning of July to the end of August.
