The government has launched an urban development programme, under which Prime Minister Viktor Orbán signed a cooperation agreement with northwestern Hungary’s Sopron. Improving cities is crucial for Hungary’s rural development, the prime minister told a press conference. He added that similar cooperation agreements would be negotiated with all major cities of the 23 counties of Hungary.

The European Commission has referred Hungary to the European Court of Justice for failure to transpose EU law into its legislation on energy efficiency, the Commission said. The move will take an infringement procedure launched against Hungary earlier to the third, litigation stage. Brussels has asked the court to impose a fine of 15,444 euros per day until the breach is stopped.

Czech carrier Smartwings will launch seven new flights from Hungary this summer, Airline Route said. From June, Smartwings will launch weekly flights from Budapest to Rhodes, Corfu, Palma de Mallorca, Zakynthos, Kos and Heraklion. From the end of June, it will fly weekly between Debrecen (E Hungary) and Heraklion.

Unidentified people have desecrated graves in the Jewish cemetery in Gyöngyös, in some cases scattering the remains of the dead, president of the town’s Jewish religious community Péter Weisz announced on Sunday. He said the perpetrators damaged the graves, desecrated the remains of those buried there and caused serious financial damage to the fence surrounding the cemetery.
