The number of births went up by just under an annual 1% to 21,274 in Hungary in January-March, while deaths were down by 3.9%, according to the Central Statistical Office said. The number of marriages was up by nearly 10% to 4,247 in the period. The pace of the natural decline of the population slowed from 0.53% to 0.47% in January-March from the same period in 2013.

In 1990 József Antall could consider himself, spiritually at least, prime minister of 15 million Hungarians but today Viktor Orbán can only refer to between 12 to 13 million. There are eight states in the Carpathian Basin of 285 000 sq km with a total population of 26 million.
