The Venice Commission will adopt an opinion on the fourth amendment of Hungary’s Basic Law at a plenary session in June, Nepszabadsag reports. The Commission was recently asked by Council of Europe leader Thorbjorn Jagland and separately by the Hungarian Foreign Ministry to examine the amendment passed by Parliament last week.

The Socialists will start a petition drive to have the VAT on basic foodstuffs lowered from 27% to 5%, party president Attila Mesterházy told reporters last Wednesday. Speaking after a meeting of the party executive, he said the drive is necessary because Fidesz did not support the Socialist proposal in Parliament.
