Hungarians Celebrate National Poetry Day With Recitals & Book Kiosks

Each year, on 11 April, Hungarians come together to celebrate The Day of Hungarian Poetry. As a part of this event, held on the birthday of famed Hungarian poet Attila József since 1964, people young and old celebrated the inspiring achievements of their country’s greatest literary geniuses.

Hungary’s biggest arts festival, the 27th Valley of Arts will take place between the 21st and 30th of June in Kapolcs, Vigántpetend and Taliándörögd. A Hungarian love story called "On Body and Soul" about two lonely hearts working in a slaughterhouse in Budapest won the Golden Bear for best film on Saturday at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival.

To mark National Poetry Day, Ambassador Lindsay recorded a video message for our Facebook followers. The Ambassador reads a poem by Hungarian poet Attila József entitled "Tavasz Van! Gyönyörű!" (Spring has come! Beautiful!). National Poetry Day in Hungary is marked each year on 11 April, the birthday of poet Attila József (1905-1937).

As you most likely know, a couple of years ago all schools were nationalized and put under the authority of one monstrous organization called Klebelsberg Intézményfenntartó Központ (KLIK), named after Kunó Klebelsberg, minister of education between 1922 and 1931.

The history of the New York Palace dates back to the 70s of the 19th century when a talented young man from Upper Hungary called Max Aufricht arrived to Budapest with a teacher’s diploma and a silver forint in his pocket. But his poverty was paired with immense ambition; he obtained a doctoral degree in law and learned French.
