Hungary’s Govt Measures To Help Needy Through Winter

The government is planning to take several measures to help the poor and homeless in the winter time, government spokeswoman Éva Kurucz told a press conference on Monday. Speaking at northern Hungary’s Sóshartyán, Kurucz said that the government would spend some 9 billion forints (EUR 29.4m) on services for the homeless, and would provide free firewood for poor families.

Sleet and freezing rain have left streets in western Budapest’s hills and many roads across the country impassable, while disaster management staff have been busy removing fallen trees in many places. Several streets in Budapest’s 2nd and 12th districts were closed for traffic on Tuesday morning, the disaster management authority reported on its website.

Parliament approved a law on “fair banking” and a separate legislation on converting forex loans into home currency. The former establishes strict conditions for unilateral changes to interest rates and fees, as well as requires banks to provide adequate information before loan contracts are signed.
