Hungary’s Govt Measures To Help Needy Through Winter
The government is planning to take several measures to help the poor and homeless in the winter time, government spokeswoman Éva Kurucz told a press conference on Monday. Speaking at northern Hungary’s Sóshartyán, Kurucz said that the government would spend some 9 billion forints (EUR 29.4m) on services for the homeless, and would provide free firewood for poor families.

“Nobody at risk in the winter will be left alone,” she said. Currently there are 9,644 beds at homeless shelters nationwide, and the government is planning to add over 1,200, while daytime shelters can accommodate 7,325 people, Kurucz said.

The government will also launch a programme to support the poor, and spend a total 34 billion forints on its components between 2014 and 2020. The programme will allow for foodstuff and meals for the needy, while partner organisations will offer follow-up programmes, health screenings and surveys, she said.
