On the subject of the Oct. 2 referendum in Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said the vote was needed to address the growing conflicts expected between Hungary and Brussels over migration issues. “Brussels wants to force rules on member states which are against their interests, and if this does not change it will lead to a prolonged political and legal dispute,” he said.

The state of domestic politics in Turkey has changed, and there is a serious threat that it could ignite a migration wave through the Balkan route similar to the wave seen last year, Zsolt Molnár, the committee’s head, said.

September will see the start of new kinds of vocational training in Hungary, Economy Minister Mihály Varga said in Kecskemét, in central Hungary. Opening the new school year at a youth centre in the city, Varga noted that both vocational high schools and vocational colleges will offer matriculation exams, so there is a possibility that students can continue into higher education.

The government considers sports as a “strategic sector and a national cause”, János Lázár, the government office chief, told a weekly press briefing. The achievements of Hungary’s athletes in the 2016 Rio Olympics and in past years will help the country’s bid to host the Olympics, Lázár said. He called Hungary one of the most successful “sporting nations” in the world.
