Hungarian Defence, National Security Committees Discuss Migrant Crisis

Over twenty government officials attended the joint session of parliament’s defence and national security committees to discuss Hungary’s response to the ongoing migrant crisis. Interior ministry state secretary Károly Kontrát told the committees that once the construction of the fence on the border with Serbia is complete, it will be secure enough to stem the flow of illegal migrants.

The Government decided on the construction of two types of border fence at its Tuesday meeting; the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defence will build an almost four-metre-tall fence on the sections of the border which can be easily penetrated, the Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office informed the press at a press conference held during the break of the cabinet meeting.

Reported crimes and the number of perpetrators have more or less stagnated between 2009 and 2013, averaging between 400,000-450,000 cases each year, the chief public prosecutor told parliament. In his report on the past five years of his authority, Péter Polt said that most of the crimes committed had been theft or burglary, violations of law enforcement, corruption and forgery.
