Hungarian Government: Education Spending Up Significantly

Government spending on education came to 2,000 billion forints (EUR 6.4bn) last year, up significantly from the 1,800 billion forints spent on the sector in 2015, the state secretary for education said on Tuesday. Public school and higher education workers are both set to receive wage increases starting September this year, László Palkovics told a press conference.

The 25th anniversary of the first heart transplant operation was marked in Budapest on Tuesday. Béla Merkely, vice rector of Budapest’s Semmelweis Medical University, said in his address that the anniversary “gives hope to patients waiting for a new heart and ensures recognition to people working to produce similar achievements”.

The Hungarian government will spend HUF 192.6 billion (USD 650 million) building 19 new dormitory buildings and renovating 104 existing ones between now and 2023, which will house some 37,500 students, reports epulettar.hu. This will translate to the renovation of some 12,000 existing dormitory rooms and the building of another 4,000 rooms housing 8,000 students.
