Hungary to Host New UN University
A new United Nations University institute is set to open in Kőszeg, western Hungary, hosted by the Institute of Advanced Studies Kőszeg (iASK). Culture and Innovation Minister Balázs Hankó announced this on Facebook on February 24, 2026, following a host country agreement signed in late 2025 between Hungary and the UNU.

Background and Timeline

The project stems from four years of preparation, initiated by iASK, with a UNU scoping study approved in June 2025. A host agreement was formalized in November 2025 by Hankó and UNU Vice-Rector Prof. Shen Xiaomeng, making it the first UNU institute in Central and Eastern Europe and the 14th globally. It aligns with Hungary's role as a bridge between East and West, leveraging Kőszeg's border location near Vienna.

Focus Areas

The institute emphasizes interdisciplinary research on peace causes, lasting peace conditions, human security, and transformative technologies like AI, biotech, nanotech, and neurotech. It will target global challenges such as geopolitical conflicts, migration, climate change, and sustainability, with emphasis on the Global South, Balkans, and South Caucasus, translating research into policy.

UNU Overview

UNU, headquartered in Tokyo since 1975, is not a traditional university but a network producing policy-relevant research and offering postgraduate/doctoral programs for future leaders. Other European sites include Bonn, Helsinki, and Maastricht; Kőszeg's will foster global collaborations.

Relevance for Expats

Kőszeg, a historic town of ~11,000 near Austria, already attracts international researchers via iASK scholarships from around the world. The institute promises jobs, internships, and academic opportunities in UN-linked roles, boosting the local economy and appealing to expats in research, policy, or education amid Hungary's growing international hubs. Expats note family-friendly living, though small-town life requires proximity to Vienna for amenities.
