Corvinus in Budapest & Chinese Uni of Hong Kong Sign AIM Research Cooperation Deal
Corvinus University of Budapest and The Chinese University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Research Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding for strategic cooperation called Academic and Innovation Matrix (AIM).

One of its foci is knowledge sharing on artificial intelligence, open not only to academia but also to startups.

The partnership agreement aims to strengthen international research and student exchange and cooperation in science, technology and innovation between the two institutions, contributing to the scientific and technological development of both China and Hungary.

The research cooperation and the first year plan were signed by Yam Yeung, head of the Shenzhen Research Institute of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK SZRI); Lajos Szabó, acting rector of Corvinus University of Budapest; Péter Fehér, international director, Andrea Kő, Head of the Institute of Data Analytics and Information Systems; and Péter Baranyi, head of the Research Center for Cognitive Infocommunications of the Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS) on March 6 in Shenzhen.

The Academic and Innovation Matrix (AIM) plan is based on a professional collaboration between Péter Baranyi and Yeung Yam that has been going on for more than two decades. Their joint efforts have facilitated the exchange of Hungarian and Chinese researchers.

The establishment of a new school of mathematical control theory, based on tensor multiplication, in which researchers from both countries have participated, has already produced tangible results in the partnership.

In recent years, international scientific conferences have been jointly organised in addition to the growing cooperation, including the InnoCenter of the Centrerfor Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence (CPII) at CUHK.

"It is with great pleasure that I reflect on the fruitful collaboration that commenced over two decades ago with Professor Baranyi. This partnership has flourished into a successful endeavor between the Chinese University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Research Institute and Corvinus University of Budapest that stands as a beacon of academic excellence in Hungary.

The cooperation will also serve to support the Belt and Road Initiative through by strengthening of the China-Hungary technological and cultural exchanges, in line with the national strategies of both countries
", said Yam Yeung, head of CUHK SZRI.

"Corvinus University is honored to have signed a research agreement with one of Asia's top universities, which is ranked 47th in the internationally benchmarked QS World Higher Education Ranking.

The institutionalization of this collaboration, which has a rich professional history, will ensure the successful continuation and further development of this inspiring professional partnership. To the best of my knowledge, this agreement is the first Hungarian-Chinese knowledge transfer cooperation that brings together education, research, innovation, and incubation,
" said Péter Baranyi, research professor at Corvinus University of Budapest, on the occasion of the signing.

According to the plans, in addition to the first steps of the Academic and Innovation Matrix between the two universities, in the first year of the strategic agreement, further regular international science and innovation conferences will be held, for example in 2024 at Corvinus University in Budapest and in 2025 in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, on artificial intelligence, and the business and social aspects of digitalization.

These professional events will target not only the academic community, but also AI start-ups that are being incubated by the Shenzhen Research Institute of the University of Hong Kong, China.

The event also commemorated the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Hungary and China, with diplomats from the research institutes and the Consulate General in Guangzhou.

The MOU is part of the Belt and Road Initiative, a global infrastructure development strategy and a complex geopolitical-strategic plan combining political, economic and defense objectives, launched by the Chinese government in 2013 to reach more than 150 countries and international organizations.
