Hungary’s economy is set to enjoy robust growth rates this year and in 2015 before a marked slowdown is likely to set in, London-based emerging markets economists said. Given a much stronger first half than anticipated, “it is easy to see” Hungary growing by 3.5% this year against Morgan Stanley’s previous forecast of 2.9%, the report says.

One in three Hungarians (3.3 million) are now living in poverty while the average citizen has just HUF 522 (USD 2.19) per day for food and that amount is falling, according to a recent Eurostat report. This means that the average Hungarian must make ends meet with less than HUF 65,000 (USD 272) per month.

Hungary’s national police chief firmly rejected claims of ethnic profiling, in a letter released on the police homepage. Károly Papp responded to an initiative by the Roma Press Centre and five civil rights groups that proposed on July 15 setting up a working group with the national police with the aim of “improving the (police’s) practice of levying fines for misdemeanours.”
