Hungary, as the current president of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), hosted a large-scale international event remembering the Holocaust, in London. Szabolcs Takács, Hungary’s state secretary for EU affairs, said London was a symbolic venue for such an event as Britain had a very strong Jewish community from whom there was a lot to learn.

Government officials commemorated the August 20 national holiday nationwide, remembering the creation of the first Hungarian state by St Stephen. Speaking in Eger, northern Hungary, Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén said it had been St Stephen’s decision that the country should not become subordinated to any power, whether the Holy Roman Empire or the Byzantine Empire.
