Fifth District Mayor Antal Rogán on Thursday unveiled a life-size bronze statue of American actor Peter Falk on Falk Miksa utca. Falk, who had Hungarian ancestry, is very popular in Hungary for his role as TV detective Lt. Columbo. However, there is no evidence that he was related to Miksa Falk, who was a 19th-century journalist.

The trial has begun of a 92-year-old former communist leading official charged with war crimes during the crushing of the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising. Béla Biszku has said he does not understand why he has been charged with the murder of nearly fifty people, tabloid Blikk said on Tuesday, when he was due to appear before the court.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, tens of thousands of Bulgarian market gardeners appeared in Hungary to introduce new vegetables and revolutionise gardening with the application of new irrigation technologies. They played a key role in Hungarian vegetable growing for over a century.
