The survey, conducted in November with 1,658 participants, indicates that most people are drawn to a wine region primarily for its natural setting and opportunities for excursions. Wine tastings, cellar visits, wellness options and gastronomic programmes also play a significant role when choosing a destination.
Tokaj, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was named the top choice by 23% of respondents. Eger followed with 16%, and Villány with 15%. The Balaton Uplands and Badacsony shared fourth place at 7% each, while Szekszárd came fifth with 5%.
These were followed by the Mátra and Balatonfüred–Csopak regions (4%), then Balatonboglár (3%). Mór and Sopron each received 2%, and Neszmély also ranked with 2%.
The study also looked at wine consumption habits. White wine remains the most popular choice (43%), ahead of red (30%) and rosé (16%).
Sparkling wine accounted for 5%, semi-sparkling for 1%, and 5% of respondents said they do not drink wine at all. Preferences were largely consistent across age groups, with one exception: among those over 65, red wine takes the lead.
As for specific varieties, aszú topped the list at 16%, followed by Olaszrizling (11%), Merlot (10%), Bikavér (9%) and Cserszegi Fűszeres (also 9%).
