Large food retail chains responded coolly to the news that the law on restricting shopping on Sundays is to be repealed. Spar said it will do its best to establish conditions for Sunday reopening. Only those units will be opened where consumer demand justifies it, the company said, most likely in city centres and tourist areas.

Socialist lawmaker István Nyakó said that the government decision to revoke the law on Sunday shopping restrictions was “a small victory for the opposition Socialists and a big one for the electorate”. For the second time, the ruling parties have been forced to “back off”, Nyakó said, referring to demonstrations that resulted in the withdrawal of plans to introduce an internet tax in the past.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán participated at the inauguration of the Tiszaliget Stadium in Szolnok, central Hungary, on Saturday. Rebuilding the stadium cost more than 2 billion forints (EUR 6.4m), of which 600 million was covered by the local football club, 400 million by the state and the rest through corporate sponsorship linked to tax preferences, Orbán said.
