Hungary’s Economy Performed Well In H1

In the first half of the year Hungary’s economy performed well, government office chief János Lázár told a regular government news conference, adding that growth had been accompanied by a continual reduction in the public debt. He said that growth in the second quarter could be attributed to government policymaking, since EU payments only kicked in after that.

Consumer prices in Hungary fell by an annual 0.3% in July on lower vehicle fuel and household energy prices, the Central Statistical Office said. Analysts had expected headline CPI to be around or slightly under zero because of low fuel prices and base effects.

The Bakers Association is lobbying for the extension of VAT cuts to bread products, after the government announced plans to lower the consumption tax on milk, eggs and poultry to 5% from 27% in 2017. Bread is the most basic food, and lower taxes would not only curb tax evasion, but lead to higher production and more jobs, the association argued.

The government could introduce a new tax on large retail chains in the spring, government commissioner for retail policy Kristóf Szatmáry told Magyar Idõk. The levy would hit high turnover retail chains in order to "correct biased market conditions," and help smaller businesses, which, he noted, are mostly owned by Hungarians.
