Retail Sales Edge Up in Hungary

Retail sales in Hungary rose 2.1pc year-on-year in May, data released by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) show.
Retail sales rose at the same rate when adjusted for calendar year effects.
Adjusted food sales inched up 0.5pc, non-food sales rose 4.0pc and vehicle fuel sales slipped 1.1pc.
Online and mail-order sales volume, which accounted for 8.1pc of retail turnover, rose 4.8pc. Sales volume at petrol stations slipped 1.1pc.
Retail sales fell 1.3pc in a month-on-month comparison, adjusted for seasonal and calendar year effects.
In absolute terms, retail sales came to HUF 1,691bn in May. Food sales accounted for 50pc of the total, non-food sales for 36pc and sales at petrol stations for 14pc.
For the period January-May, retail sales rose an adjusted 3.1pc and an unadjusted 2.6pc from the same period a year earlier. Food sales increased an adjusted 2.7pc, non-food sales 4.6pc and motor fuel sales 0.7pc.
In a statement issued after the release of the data, the National Economy Ministry pointed to the impact of higher wages, government measures to bring down prices and tax cuts on household consumption. All conditions are in place for retail sales and consumption of services to grow, it added.
