Lidl Magyarország will increase the wages of all of its non-executive staff by 15%, effective from July 1, the discount retail chain has announced. Lidl raised salaries by 5% as recently as March. About 90% of Lidl’s 4,000 employees will benefit from the new raise.

The government has reached an agreement with health-care unions on raising base salaries in the sector starting in September this year, the human resources minister announced on Thursday. The base salary of doctors and pharmacists will increase by gross 107,000 forints (EUR 344) from September 1 this year and by another 100,000 forints from November 1, 2017, Zoltán Balog told a press conference.

The death rate in Hungary is the fifth highest in the European Union and 70 percent higher than the EU average, a fresh report published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) shows. Fully 127,000 people died in Hungary in 2013 compared with 107,000 in Portugal and 109,000 in the Czech Republic, two countries with smaller populations than Hungary, KSH said in its Hungary 2015 report.
