Budapest Mayor Tarlós Vows To Tidy Up Underpasses
"Budapest mayor István Tarlós yesterday vowed to stop homeless people frequenting underpasses in the capital by December 15. About 150 homeless people live in underpasses and railway stations in Budapest, while 6,000 others shelter in woods or construction sites.

The aim is to ensure that no people stay in underpasses and public areas, he said. So far this autumn, ten people have died of exposure in Budapest, Tarlós noted.

He said he will try to co-ordinate the activities of several institutions to care for homeless people before winter sets in.

The underpasses in question are at Blaha Lujza tér, Astoria, Ferenciek tere, Nagyvárad tér, Batthyány tér, Nyugati, Déli, Keleti, Kelenföldi railway stations, Móricz Zsigmond körtér, Örs vezér and Flórián tér.

Tarlós told Inforádió on Wednesday that he now expects the cabinet, which is passing on 79% of the funds for the fourth metro line project, to decide whether City Hall should seek an agreement with Alstom or launch a lawsuit against the metro carriage maker.

He expressed hope that the Ft 80 billion bank debt and Ft 700 billion internal debt of the Budapest public transport company will have been paid off by the end of his term of office."
