1. Public Transport: The Effortless Route

If you want to skip the steep uphill climb, Budapest's BKK network makes reaching the top incredibly simple.

The Primary Line (Bus 27): This is your best option. It departs regularly from Móricz Zsigmond körtér—a major transit hub on the Buda side easily accessible via Metro M4 and Trams 6, 17, 19, 41, 47, 49, 56, and 61.

The Stop: Get off at Búsuló Juhász (Citadella). From there, it is a flat, easy 5-to-7-minute stroll to the main fortress gates.

Alternative Route: You can also take Bus 7 or Bus 110/112 to Sánc utca and transfer to Bus 27, though starting at Móricz Zsigmond körtér is generally much faster.

2. Walking Routes: The Scenic Experience

For those who prefer a workout paired with cinematic views, walking up Gellért Hill takes about 20–30 minutes.

From Liberty Bridge (Szent Gellért tér) – The "Classic" Climb

Starting directly across from the iconic Gellért Hotel, follow the paved, winding serpentine pathways upward.

Highlights: You will pass the fascinating Gellért Hill Cave Church and several newly refreshed "mini-lookout" stone terraces.

3. By Car: New 2026 Parking & Access Restrictions

Driving up the hill has changed significantly with the 2026 reopening, a move designed by the city to curb heavy traffic and pollution.

Parking Availability: A dedicated parking lot remains near the top, close to the Búsuló Juhász restaurant. However, spaces are strictly limited and fill up rapidly on weekends.

Fees & Limits: Parking is subject to standard Zone A or B rates (approximately 450–600 HUF per hour). Keep in mind that standard street parking limits in Budapest apply.

The TOBI System for Tour Buses: If you are organizing corporate events or hosting large private groups arriving by chartered coach, note that new regulations (effective March 30, 2026) require all tour buses to have pre-registered permits via the TOBI system to access the hill.

The 2026 renovation focused heavily on creating a fully barrier-free environment, a massive upgrade from the old fortress layout.

Multiple Entrances: Instead of the bottleneck at the old single-entry gate, the Citadella can now be accessed from three different directions, vastly improving crowd flow.

Elevators: New modern lifts have been seamlessly integrated into the fortress walls, allowing those with limited mobility or strollers to easily reach the upper viewing decks and the exhibition spaces.

Amenities: The site now features a cozy café, a curated gift shop, and state-of-the-art evening lighting, making it an incredibly safe and atmospheric spot for a night walk.

Quick Tip for Expats:

While the indoor exhibition spaces and café operate on specific business hours, the outdoor Citadella grounds and park remain open 24/7 with no entry fee.

To capture the perfect photo, head up during the "golden hour" right before sunset—the newly restored Liberty Statue makes for a spectacular backdrop against the evening sky.
